Permanent Location Project
PSA Needs Its Own Home
The Portrait Society of Atlanta, with a membership of nearly
300, is dedicated to the preservation and education of the
fine art of portraiture through educational opportunities
for both our members and the public. We are the oldest such
organization in the nation. For the past 25 years, we have
held our public exhibitions, workshops, and demonstrations
in various venues across the Atlanta area. We have long outgrown
the classroom at the cultural arts center in Dunwoody where
we have held our program-oriented meetings and critique sessions
for the past decade. As an all-volunteer maintained organization,
we depend upon the generosity of our membership in every capacity.
To provide greater opportunities for our membership and the
community, the Society publishes a quarterly magazine, maintains
an informative website as well as coordinating portrait workshops
and educational programs with nationally known portrait artists.
The Society's efforts are not limited to benefiting our
members alone. We have recently increased focus on our Education
Committee to provide workshops and scholarship opportunities
to highschool students in the metro Atlanta community who
are seriously interested in the arts. With recent cutbacks
in education, these area students will strongly benefit from
the programs offered by the PSA. Also, the public is invited
to visit our exhibitions, workshops, public demonstrations
and educational programs.
As our outreach to the community has grown, so has the need
to ask the community for assistance in obtaining a central
location to better fulfill our mission. As a non-profit 501(c)
(3) organization, all donations to the PSA are tax deductible
under IRS rules.
The Vision
Our permanent location, whether leased, purchased or
built should have space for the following:
* A large gallery for revolving public exhibitions for members
and talented students. Our Referral Program will also have
a central location to display a portfolio containing examples
of work from our Juried and above status members.
* A resource library to house our extensive collection of
books and videos, as well as archiving the PSA's slide library
of previous exhibitions, the entire collection of PSA's FOLIO
magazine, and our permanent historical records.
* A large open area (enough to seat at least 150 guests) for
demonstrations, meetings, workshops, lectures, sketch groups
and various classes.
* One or two offices for administrative needs, and storage
for all PSA property such as the projector, easels, promotional
materials, etc.
* And best of all, a place where members can go to be surrounded
by fellow portrait painters.
Two Stages -Two Funds
Irving Grier Lawhon Memorial Fund.
The Portrait Society of Atlanta has
been slowly accumulating funds in our 16-year-old Lawhon Fund,
designated for the purchase or construction of a building,
which is, of course, our ultimate goal. We endeavor to continue
growing this fund by soliciting contributions from our membership
and the community, and reminding donors to bequeath contributions.
Homeward Bound Fund.
In the meantime, we are exploring possibilities for
leasing a location so we can immediately move forward with
our community outreach and youth educational programs which
is in keeping with our mission. We have created a new fund
called the Homeward Bound Fund to help us raise the money
needed to secure temporary space, whether it be a complete
facility or just gallery space. Financial contributions, assistance
for obtaining grants or donated use of actual facilities will
greatly enhance our ability to serve the community.
We hope you will take this opportunity to participate in
this historical venture and donate generously to The Portrait
Society of Atlanta, Inc. Thank you for your support!
